OUR STORY
This is my rescue dog and best friend, Maude Merdock. She has been my greatest teacher and guide in understanding dog behavior and epigenetics. She is my inspiration to continuously further my education and career as a dog trainer.
Merdock has a high prey drive and is full of energy. She requires plenty of physical exercise to practice her agility and athleticism, as well as an abundance of mental stimulation to exercise her active, intelligent mind.
She is hyper sensitive to her environment and easily overstimulated. This, along with her tendency toward fear and anxiety, means that she can be reactive toward strangers and other dogs. As a puppy, it was difficult to go to the park, walk around the neighborhood, or enjoy other "normal" dog activities.
My approach has been nervous system regulation. Rather than teaching her to perform well under stress, I want her to truly feel calm. Using pattern games and fun drills, we have worked through frustration, fear, and reactivity. Using force free, positive reinforcement training, we created a strong relationship, built on mutual trust, respect, and communication. Although she still struggles at times, our walks and outings are now peaceful and enjoyable for us both.
